In Case of Fire

31 January 2008

WITH STRICT fire precautions now in force for churches, a Birmingham silversmith is set to launch a new, special edition whistle - engraved with praying hands.

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 stipulates that all places of worship should have means to alert people quickly in case of fire. A whistle is recommended, as long as it is powerful enough ‘to be heard all around the building’.

Avon Silversmiths, based in Britain’s oldest jewellery centre, are producing two special edition whistles for churches, to be launched at the forthcoming Heart of England Christian Resources Exhibition (International Centre, Telford, 21-23 Feb)

‘Our first design is shaped like a referee’s whistle although, if this is ever blown, everybody gets sent off!’ explains Avon Silversmiths’ Tony McCarthy. ‘It can have praying hands, or a saint depicted on it, depending on what the church wants. It costs £65.’

A smaller, tube-shaped whistle, which can be placed in an inside pocket or worn round the neck, will retail at £45.

According to the Department for Communities and Local Government an estimated 1000 fires happen in churches every year in England and Wales, some 200 of which are arson. Many of these could be avoided by taking simple precautions.

‘Our whistles are useful for personal protection as well,’ says Tony McCarthy. ‘You can’t carry a gun or a knife but a loud whistle can draw the kind of attention to make an attacker flee.’

Introducing new products and services for churches is one aim of the Heart of England Christian Resources Exhibition, often dubbed 'the ideal church show'.

More than 5000 people, representing most mainstream Christian denominations, are expected to attend the event which will feature up to 150 organisations, from book publishers to youth work specialists, relief agencies to chair manufacturers.

Under the title ‘Your Church’ more than 30 seminars and workshops will target issues like multi-media worship, debt counseling, child protection and gang culture. Expert advice will be at hand from people engaged at the leading edge of local church ministry.
